Terence M. Myckatyn, MD

Dr. Myckatyn has been a plastic surgeon for over 17 years. He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He recently served as president of the Saint Louis Association of Plastic Surgeons (SLAPS). He serves on several committees with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). He is on the Board of Directors for the Aesthetic Surgery Education Research Foundation. These committees look at patient safety, studying the efficacy of emerging technologies and techniques, plastic surgeon education in breast and cosmetic surgery, as well as improving research in plastic surgery. He has also been admitted by his peers to the prestigious American Association of Plastic Surgeons. At West County Plastic Surgeons of Washington University, Dr. Myckatyn focuses on all areas of cosmetic surgery and breast reconstruction. Dr. Myckatyn is a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery and is the director of Cosmetic and Breast Plastic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. By training several plastic surgery residents and fellows annually, he is involved with educating the next generation of plastic surgeons about cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Myckatyn completed an honors bachelor’s of science program in human physiology, and then earned his doctorate of medicine at the University of British Columbia. He completed his plastic surgery residency and fellowship training at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is the author of more than 135 peer-reviewed research articles, textbook chapters, and has been a featured presenter at national and international plastic surgical and medical conferences. Since 2008, Dr. Myckatyn has been recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in St. Louis” and “Best Doctors in America” by Best Doctors, Inc, and as a “Top Doctor” by Castle Connolly Limited. He is the tenth recipient of the prestigious “John E. Hoopes Academic Scholar” award from the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (2006-2008). He was also the first plastic surgeon to be presented the “C. James Carrico Faculty Research Fellowship” award from the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Myckatyn has been principle investigator for 8 clinical trials that include a large multi-center study investigating the safety of fat grafting in breast surgery, another study evaluating the impact of 3D photography on breast augmentation, another evaluating the impact of biofilms on breast implants, as well as several others. In addition, he uses his platform as a cosmetic plastic surgeon to assist in studying the relationship of inflammation, fat, and various metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Currently, Dr. Myckatyn is focused on understanding the impact of bacteria on breast implants to make breast augmentation and breast reconstruction safer. He is also focused on improving how plastic surgeon’s present and guide women through the decision-making process for having breast reconstruction after breast cancer. Plastic surgery is a unique blend of sound medical judgment, surgical technique, art and the discriminating use of emerging technologies. Plastic surgery is most effective when a specific cosmetic concern is treated with the most appropriate cosmetic procedure. To ensure that this is the case, patients should always seek a board-certified, well-trained plastic surgeon who can safely offer multiple surgical and non-surgical options. A surgeon with many tools in his or her toolbox is most likely to get you the result you want. As the old saying goes, ‘Just because you have a hammer doesn’t mean that everything is a nail.’ – Dr. Terry Myckatyn
