Research topics: nerve injury and nerve surgery

Susan Mackinnon’s, MD, clinical research pertains to advancing the understanding of the management of nerve-injured patients. With Andrew Yee, PhD, Mackinnon is pursuing video-based learning in nerve surgery, not only to include nerve surgeries themselves, but also to include the component of clinical judgment and patient selection, which is so critical to patient safety and quality improvement outcomes. Mackinnon and Yee are also using a web-based approach to trial the utility of coaching surgeons on patient selection criteria and on their surgical techniques.

Mackinnon’s research also focuses on the evaluation of patient outcomes following nerve transfer surgeries. She is also investigating opioid reduction after plastic surgery and uses a patient education brochure to educate each patient regarding the potential to become dependent on pain medications.
